I've looked at the chart and read the threads but I'm still a bit confused. Will the LU fom a 1990. 225 work on my 1985 140? Both are looper motors. If I understand the things I've read it will work but I will need to change props?
The 1985 120/140 engines are unique. They are the one year that they came with V6 gearcases. Having said that, it's likely the V4 versions came with a different gear set and have a different gear ratio. Looks like the 140 gearset was 13:28, while the 225 was 14:26. It would work, but you'd have to run some odd sized props. Not sure if the drive shaft splines are the same for both engines-that far apart in years.
Thanks for the response, but I made a typo that will I'm sure effect your response. My motor is an 87 NOT the 85. Would a v-6 gase still work? How about a lower unit from a v-4 crossflow of the approximate year? Thanks for any help.
I just got the lower unit down and did the measurements outlined in one of the threads . Definitely the smaller one. So now I know a v-6 wont work. That and the mechanic at the shop told me the same thing when I stopped in on my way home from work. Just have to figure out what lower units WILL fit.
