Ok, I have had my boat now for about two weeks and after talking to the previous owner I know the lower unit has not been serviced in quite some time. So I figure I would go at it since I have my trusty Seloc Repair Manual and all winter to work on it, shouldn't be too hard.
1987 Force 85 Outboard
Problem # 1) The only probelm I had in removing the lower unit was that one of the bolt heads holding the L/U to the upper unit sheared off. The other five were no problem. What is the best way to get the remaining bolt
out? Can a machine shop do this or do I need to take it to a boat repair facility?
Problem # 2) L/U drain plug, seems to be a small allen head bolt which is stripped. Was unable to drain the
L/U fluid at this time. Machine shop or boat repair shop to have this fixed?
I was able to remove the impeller housing and impeller with no problems. Impeller looked real good.
Problem # 3) In the process of removing the water pump body one of the bolts sheared off (darn again). Machine
shop or boat repair shop to have fixed?
Now I was able to drain the oil out of the lower unit by turning it upside down.
Now that I have this disassembled I need to locate the following items:
drive shaft oil seal
O ring for drive shaft oil seal
Sealing ring for water pump body
Shift shaft oil seal
crush ring
gasket for water pump body
I figure while its apart to go ahead and replace all of these o rings and oil seals. Where would be a good
place on line to order these? I've checked on iboats.com and was not able to locate these specific parts. I also checked on outboardparts.com and found a lower unit seal kit, but it did not list the individual seals and O rings that came in this kit (I guess I'll call them to verify if everything is in the kits.
I've included some pics for reference.
