Re: Lower unit fill procedure

I know Im just a glass guy .. but I can explain why you fill from the bottom up ( I have learned from someone that used to Teach Merc Tech Certification ).

The reason you fill those particular drives from the bottom up is Gravity. Im not talking about fillups .. Im talking full service gear lube replacement.

Basically your going to drain as much as possible out of your drive ( dont start it before you service your drive because it will cause things to move in the lower unit ).

After you put your bucket under your drive and drain till a drip drip thing .. you have to fill it from the bottom. ..

Why you ask ? ..

Because you drained out lube from your Bearings as well .. you cant just pump and pump like crazy until it reaches your fill hole. You have to wait until the bearings fill up as well.

There is a process in filling your drive up ( only so fast/slow ) properly .. ( from what I recall is when filling with a drive with a pump on a 5 gal bucket with a lever is 5 seconds per down pump )

When the Fill is topped off .. we wait for 15 min and check again. This is for All lower units or even OB's .. its a slow pump .. wait .. pump some more if needed ( which is normally needed ) .

Hopes this helps .. patience when filling the drives ..

Re: Lower unit fill procedure

I put the top in first. The problem was getting the pump unhooked and getting that tiny plug started with oily fingers. They could have used an Allen screw so you would have something to start it with. I guess I could custom grind a screwdriver.

Thanks, John
My local Mercury dealer has those Allen screw plugs ... does make it a hint easier .. but not that much. Cheers
