I recently rplaced the retainer plate behind my carrier housing and noticed half of a tooth was broken on my drive gear coming down from the upper housing. My quetion is can I use it this weekend because I have had this trip planned for six months? Thanks guys, I know this is a stupid question but I do not have enough time to have it replaced. -Chris

Just make sure you have SeaTow, or there are plenty of people around so they can tow you back in. They shouldn't mind the inconvienience.

I am definitley not fixing it, I plan to sell the damn thing because it has been one thing after another. I put a new motor in it and all new electrical. I am finished with the stupid thing. I am going outboard next time.

I was told it would be a $1000.00 or more to fix it.

If yer sure you’re not placing yourself any one else in any danger if/when problems arise...(safety first ya know). And if yer not worried about possibly breaking down off shore, or inflicting additional damage, and increasing repair cost…go for it. But I would not.

The lower unit is somewhat common... look to ebay to replace it.

Something had to cause that gear to break. Something bound up or the unit hit something at one point. Gears don't just break off a tooth for no reason... well maybe if there was a flaw in the casting.

Simple answer. That 1/2 tooth is taking the load of a full tooth (also stressing the others in contact). When it breaks off, the following tooth will from zero contact, to the equivilent of a hammer blow when the tooth comes in contact again. Basically, this is how s$$t breaks. Could have been like that for a while, or the last time ya shut it off. Plus where is the missing part of the tooth? Not the answer ya want, I know, but the truth is I would park it until fixed.

Re: Lower Unit gear tooth broken

I actually plan to give the next guy the gear and let him take care of fixing it. I got a great deal on it so I picked it up. installing it is the expensive part.
