How in the heck did that happen??? If you are cheap then drain it, clean it well with rubbing alcohol, sand around the area lightly, and JB weld it. However, the proper way would be to weld it. Any good marina could put a small weld on that in a few minutes.

I have no clue how it happened, I just took the lower unit off to replace the impeller and noticed oil slowly dripping. Do you think they can weld it without taking all the parts out? I want it done right and want it to last.

Re: Lower unit hole.....PLEASE HELP!!!

You don't give the year. Are you sure that it is not the impact hole for the speedometer on later model Force engines? If the rubber plug in the top of the lower unit is missing, exhaust and spent oil will eventually run down the front cavity and drip out the speedometer impact hole. Smell the oil. If it smells like gasoline it is exhaust. If it smells like sulphur it is lower unit oil.

If it is indeed a perforation into the gearcase, yes, simply fill it with JB weld. FIRST ream it out with a drill so the epoxy can "grab"

That does look like the impact hole for the speedo.
Its in the right location anyways.
Where does your speedo tubing hook up to?
Year of your outboard would be most helpful.

sorry, its a 1990 90hp force outboard.
I did notice it after i removed the gearcase cover because the there was a crack in the plastic gearcase cover.

So is that hole suppose to be there?

Re: Lower unit hole.....PLEASE HELP!!!

Is there some small tubing going into the back of the lower next to the shift rod, or is the
tubing connected to a fin that is mounted to the lower part of the transom on the boat itself?
Most likely it is suppose to be there.(Edit) I have a 89 125hp lower, and a 94 120hp lower and both have this small hole for the speedo.

I also wanted to know if this crack (so i cant screw the screw in) will affect anything, or if i need to figure out how to fix it?
its the gearcase cover i was talking about.gearcasecover.jpg

Re: Lower unit hole.....PLEASE HELP!!!

There is no speedo pick up on the 1990/90.
If indeed it's a hole.Do what Frank or Bently suggests.
But welding will fix it for good.Drain it before welding.

The cover/seal.You might be able to use a bigger washer to hold it in place.
