OK I replaced impeller and gaskets and seals . Had a heck of a time putting it back on. After a couple of hours must have got everything lined, or so I thought. hooked up the muffs and cranked. no water peeing . checked for something cloged. everything fine. took the dang foot back off and checked everything, nothing wrong. Is it possible for the LU to go on and the water tube not be in right? I did see moisture on drieshaft but not much. got it ready to put back in , any tips on making sure the tube hits the hole? It is attached to the impeller housing, is that how it should be during install? will the tube or splines start connecting first? any kind of tube alignment tool???(95 4cy Merc) Thanks for any replys

You stick a finger up to the tube as the LU goes on and make sure the pump outlet and the tube are aligned ... remove finger ... push the LU up. That's it ... no special tools I've ever seen.

I have the same motor, the water tube should seat in the pump I dont think the LU will go on with it mis aligned but maybe.
Try clearing the pee hole , some people think the vanes on impeller must be in the right direction but not sure of that either maybe you want to check that.
How long did you run it before you deemed it not pumping, if I remember right after doing my impeller last winter it took a good 60 seconds for it to pee if not longer.
I've put 50 hours on the motor since & now pees like clockwork @ 30 seconds or so after starting .
I would try it again, turn the flywheel slightly while trying to align driveshaft, line everything up, dont put more then a slight film of marine grease on the spline.
I would first take the pump apart & inspect it, use marine grease on the gaskets, grease the impeller & get the vanes going in the right direction, with the key in properly, button her back up..
Good luck

OK the tube has been in the impeller housing, should it be inserted in the upper part? I tryed at firet to pull it out of housing but it was very snug so left it there and have been trying to put it back with the tube that way. So do I need to take it out and insert into the motor??

You mean the water pump housing, if I recall theres a hole in the housing the tube slips into.
Somethings wrong, maybe you pulled the tube out with the LU when you dropped it ?
Hopefully Rodbolt or other pro Merc Techs will chime in, I dont want to waste your time, I have the motor & just did my pump last winter but am no Pro.
If no experts chime in try WWW.themarinedoctor.com
this giy's a Merc tech & an Ace that offers free advice..

How long did you let it run on the flushette before concluding something was wron? Are you sure it's overheating? I wouldn't get too hung up over the telltale not starting right away.

Depending on how I am reading this thread, it sounds like you are trying to install the lower unit with the water tube pre-installed on the lower unit? The water tube should be inserted into the exhaust plate beneath the powerhead BEFORE you install the lower unit.

You should feel with drive shaft splines engage, and still have some wiggle room left to pursuade the water tube into the water pump housing as your raise the lower unit. There shoudl be a rubber alignment guide around the end of the tube to help align it.

Bottom line: Water tube and exhaust tube need to be in the mid-section before installing the lower unit.

AMD make an interesting point " Depending how I'm reading this thread ".
Somethings out of kilter with the discription of the problem I believe

Just worked on my LU no water from tell tale , Laddies helped my to figure out that the water outlet from the water jacket (head) was glogged, check that I now have a water outlet at the top like the new ones {Drill tap and connect} hope this helps!.
