I have a 1989 Mercury 80 h.p. 3 cyl. outboard motor. In which I recently found water in the lower unit of (mixed with some oil). So acting on what a guy in my local Merc dealer shop told me I changed my prop shaft seals (inner and outer) however after two runs with the boat I noticed that the lower gear lube was leaking from the vents (where you put the earmuffs when flushing). What do you pros suggest my next step should be to fix this problem ? Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Lower unit leaking oil

Welcome to iboats.

Seals fail from wear or damage. If one is worn out, the others are on their way. Typically what happens is that a failing seal will start leaking at a certain pressure. Replace that one and the next weakest one is there to leak next, maybe a few psi higher. Only way to do it on a motor where age or wear has created leaks...you gotta do them all. Do the water pump as long as you're in there.

Thank you. So you suggest getting a full seal kit and trying that, also dong the water pump while I'm in there. Seals or impella on the water pump?

Thank you again for your help.
