Lower Unit Lube Leak

Had a lower unit lube leak last boating season (had to refill the resevoir several times over a couple months).

Removed the unit, built pressure tester, and tried it last night....held 10 psi overnight.

Bought a vacuum (brake fluid) tool today and will try to adapt that to my tester tonight to check with vacuum.

Question is....if the vacuum holds, where do I look for the leak?

Anything else a fella should be checking??

Thanks in advance.

Did you drain the gear lube before you did the pressure check?

You bet....lower unit was empty when tested.

Thought of that, but if the quad ring were the problem, shouldn't that have resulted in the pressure test failing?

Noticed in my first post that I referenced removing the "lower unit"....I actually removed the outdrive (upper & lower units)...sorry if that caused any confusion.

You might want to look at the hose that goes from the bellhousing to the gimbal housing thru hull fitting. That fitting is plastic and has a bad habit of breaking.

Makes sense....thanks Don.

I'll have a look at that....assuming the snow isn't too deep at the rear of boat! Melting fast though...boating season almost here!!
