I have a 2005 Chap 204 with Alpha I Gen 2. I've been reading how to go about changing the impeller in the lower unit.

This may be a stupid question, but when I read that you have to drain the lower unit lube oil, I'm assuming this means the lube oil reservoir will drain out as well. I'm used to outboards where you can just drop the lower unit and change out the impeller.

It might weep a little bit from the upper unit. nothing to be concerned about. Just make sure you fill it from the bottom with the top plug out, when it reached the top plug, install it and ently give it about 3-5 pumps until you see oil in the res bottle, then just fill the res bottle

If you pull the drive off, complete, the check valve will seal the oil in the bottle. Then drain the drive and split it on a work bench. Much easier. And you need to have a drive off anyway to check the unis, engine alignment and gimbal bearing condition. All annual maintenance items. ;)
