Hey guys, I started my boat yesterday on muffs and I hear a rattleing noise in the lower unit when I give it gas it gets louder and faster. My question would be, just by starting the boat and no gears being engaged. What is moving in the lower unit to cause this noise? I have an alpha1 gen 1 sterndrive.
Thanks.

Re: lower unit noise

or half engaged - that would be noisy
might want to check shift cable adjustments

Please forgive me for my stupidity but if the gears were half engaged, woudn't that cause the prop to spin? As is, props not turning.
I did change out the lower shift cable and she feels like she's shifting properly.
I,m very new at this so please take it easy on me.

yes it would, assuming everything else in the lower was ok.

might be more issues there. You could try draining and refilling the gear lube to see if any metal washes out.

I'd still look at the cables. Good to check adjustment anyways if the boat is more than 5 years old.

Could be exhaust shutter noise.
