Re: Lower Unit not coming off

It's out now. I tried the wedges, but the PT wood ones I had just splintered. I tried not to put too much pressure on any one spot, but there is only so much space to get a wedge in there. Lessons learned. If that had been taken apart every couple years to replace the impeller, it might have come out easier. Either way, it's out, now I need to find a replacement. Here is a pic.IMAG0006.jpg Thanks again guys.

I don't have a problem now Gerry, it's out. I was just passing along that fact. I also wanted that other fella to know that I tried the wedges.

Lol, I thought you were being sarcastic. I think the shift shaft was rusted in. I didn't see any rust on the drive shaft.

Re: Lower Unit not coming off

I have put another lower unit on I got from a salvage dealer for $350. He checked the gear oil, pressure tested it, and it's back on the motor. Does anyone know anything about the reverse locking cam? Do I need it? After putting everything back together I noticed the bracket that the rod attaches to is broken. I think the rod activates that rev cam in the LU. Can I remove the rod and just go without it? What does the reverse locking cam do? Thanks.

Did you save the manual I sent to you last time?

The reverse locking cam prevents the engine from flying upwards when you select reverse gear.

Can you go without it, I sure as hell wouldn't.

Thanks Gerry. It never worked right to begin with, so I didn't understand how it worked until now. I always had to unlock it manually whenever I wanted to lift the motor when trailering it. It was always locked. From what I have read, it's supposed to unlock when in neutral or forward? I still have the manual and it explains how to put in back together when removing the LU.

if you have trim tilt it isn,t nessecary. If not You need it. It does only lock in reverse gear. The clamps are moved over the through pin when the cam lifts the rod in reverse. Can you post a picture of the broken bracket?

Welcome to iboats CC 50. Maxz695 was heavily engrossed in this thread and disappeared a couple of days ago, about the time you decided to join. As for working the new problem, Mr. Virgin, we can only respond to what we know. The rest is swag.

I have run OB's without reverse lock and years ago they didn't have them. However, you only really need it when you really need it. I think they had a nickname for the big Mercs back in the early '60's that you had to kill the engine to get in reverse and just hope it restarted in time.......dock smasher or something of the like. On a smaller OB you can use your hand to hold the engine down and the prop in the water. Again, if you have PTT you don't need it, nor want it.

IMAG0047.jpgI am trying to find a bracket, if not, I can make one that operates in the same manner as the broken one. After the input from the guys on here, and taking it apart and messing with it, I can see how it works and I don't want to go without it. This is the first OB motor I have owned or worked on, so it's learn as I go!

Virgin;

Are we still talking about the reverse cam lock system? I don't recognize that part. Can you point it out in the parts listing?

It's not in the parts listing that I could find Gerry. I called West Marine and they couldn't find it either. The rod that works the locking mechanism that locks the motor down connects to that bracket for any adjustment that might be needed. I've called a couple places and they don't seem to know what I'm talking about. Maybe it's considered part of the transom mount? I'm at a loss!

In the center of the pic, you will see a spring. The clamp/bracket is located next to that spring. The top of that adjuster clamp mounts on a small shaft, and the rod comes out of the LU and goes up through the hole in the bottom of the clamp/bracket. A not goes on, and when the reverse lock is activated, the cam pushes that rod up which when connected, flips the hooks over a shaft to lock it down. Hope that helps.

Re: Lower Unit not coming off

You have a different style than what Mine has I have a rod with the head that is thin and the shaft goes through. I havn,t found one like yours on ebay. They do have several that may be usable if swaped out but I can,t be sure. I have a pushrod with the head that goes inside the clamp down bracket but not outside like yours. I can post a picture later. Heres an ebay item worth looking int and inquiring about if nothing eles can be found Used Mercury 47559 Reverse Lock Push Rod w Yoke and Reverse Lock | eBay
