Lower Unit Oil leak

I have a 2001 Yamahaa Saltwater Series II OX66 200 HP engine. Last weekend we had some fishing line make it around the prop. I was able to take the line off but noticed gear oil coming out where the shaft goes into the lower unit of my engine. It looks like I may have damaged a seal but will have to inspect for further clarification. Has anyone had to fix this issue before, if so, what does the job entail? Should I tackle it myself or take it to a mechanic? Thanks for any and all advice! Capt Dave

remove prop and inspect the seal...maybe line just worked it's way under the seal causing the leak and if seal isn't damaged, you can just pull line out. that may be wishful thinking but worth a look. Good Luck!

i just replaced prop shaft and seal on my suzuki dt 75. how mechaniclly inclinded are you? ever do a front crank seal on a car engine? it about the same. there are 2 seals in there back to back, one is postioned to keep grease in(back one) and the other is install backwards to keep water out. just very careful not to nick smooth prop shaft surface. you should be able to do this without removeing lower unit.

Re: Lower Unit Oil leak

depends on salt water use, I do a couple per month anyway.
in salt water you normally have to cut the spanner nut and use heat to aide in gear case removal. carefully measure the seal depth in the housing BEFORE removing them so you can seat the new seals in at the proper depth.
both seal lips face OUT away from the gears
