lower unit refitting

Hi all
can any one help or tell me what i am doing wrong , i have removed the lower unit on my jhonson, replaced the impeller and now have problems with putting it back . all seams to go ok but there is a half inch gap between the lower unit and the bottom of the leg . i did not want to force it in. can anyone tell me if it just need a bit of force to put it back or there is another way

line up the water tube. pull the spark plugs and rotate the flywheel, is the shift rod lined up it connector.

thanks , will try again tonight , all was lined up but had not removed plugs or turned fly wheel

did you grease the splines on the drive shaft?
