lower unit removal 15 hp merc

i have a 15 hp merc it is a 2002 and i need to replace the water pump. i beleave the shift rod is removed by the engine but i do not se how that clip works.

dose anyone have a link to the free online manual?

Under the carb there is a pin that must be removed

thanks i seen the rod but i did not see a way to remove it. i will be taking the carb off tomarrow to clean the idle ports out so mayby that will give me a bit more room to work with.

The retainer at the top of the shift rod is oval shaped,and has a tab on it.Pry @ the tab so that the oval rotates counter-clockwise a bit,then pull the oval piece towards you (off).Now the shift rod is free from the linkage.

Someone may have a link,and more work is involved.That is just the basics.I'd pursue my own paper manual,and a factory one at that.It is cheap insurance of doing repairs yourself.

yes i beleve i will go find a manual today. i work on inboards all the time this is new to me.
