Lower Unit Removal

I have a 2003 30hp 4stroke and I need info on how to disconnect the shift rod it is not the same as my old motor, thanks

The shift shaft has splines and does not need to be disconnected for removal of LU. You will need to align when you put back together. You should get a manual or go HERE<br /><br /> http://www.biggerhammer.net/mercury/factory_manuals/

North, aren't the newer 4-stroke shift shafts different than the older 2-strokes? For example, the manual you refer to illustrates how to un-snap a retainer from the lower clip, and then slide it to the left. That would appear to be under the cowling? The pictorial description looks substantially different that what I am used to, with traditional splined shafts.

My bad. You may be right now that I look at manual. Why did they mess up a good thing? Sorry about that Bill
