i have a 1985 35 hp merc. i removed all the bolts, 5 total, and cannot get the lower unit to drop more than about 1/4 inch. It seems to be stuck. Can anyone advise me on the best way to get the lower unit dropped? i need to repair the water pump. Any help is greatly appreciated. You may respond to my email address... josh.henry1@gmail.com.

thanks.

Re: lower unit removal

Have you removed the shift shaft link? I'm not sure what yours is like but many have a threaded connection halfway up that must be taken apart. The other type of connection I've seen is a pin through the shift shaft located just under the carburetor, you may have to pull the electric starter if so equipped.

Re: lower unit removal

I saw the pin on the shift shaft, and removed the electric start, however, i cannot figure out how to remove the pin. Previous postings on other sites have said there is nothing more to do once the the nuts are taken off. They have also mentioned that the shaft can be corroded up in the compartment itself. How would i remove that pin?
