I have an 86 bayliner with an 86 85 hp force engine I was getting it ready for the winter and was told by the dealership parts man that I needed to remove the drain screw and he pointed to the pivot screw and said when the new oil comes out here it is full well I was stupid and listened. I pulled the lower unit off and it seems like the shift rod is in the right place the screw did slide back in ok. how do I know if something is wrong of if something dropped into the bottom of the unit without takining it all apart.

You don't. It's a crapp shoot.

Several people have done this, and thought it was together correctly.
Some even used it a few times before...... it blew apart.

The best you can do it to verify that it is shifting thru all the gears.

Or pull the water pump and top cover off the lower unit and visually inspect.

Re: Lower unit removed pivot screw on accident

thanks for your help. To be safe I took the lower unit into the repair shop today. I am not secure enough in my abilities to pull the unit apart.

thanks again.
