Lower unit repair

Can these holes just be filled with JB WaterWeld or MarineTex, sanded, and finished, or is there another recommended repair?



How about this one - I suppose it would need to have some material welded on, shaped, and finished?

The Holes can certainly be filled with JB Weld(Always gives me pleasure to see any and all of those Whaletale things tossed). As for the second Motor with the damaged AV Plate, it appears to me that Metal forward of the Damage, is bent upwards a bit. That should be Straightened, as the Curvature can cause Water to curl up, instead separating cleanly from the AV Plate as intended. A Welder, skilled in working on Aluminium should be able to do fix that, and also rebuild the missing Metal

Why is that? I used a hydrofoil first on my Mercury 175EFI and then on my Yamaha F200. Worked extremely well. Great bang for the buck. I did modify mine so that it was clamped on such that I did not have to drill holes. Did that so that if it did not work I could remove it.

I had one on my Honda 15 hp with a tunnel hull for the prop, worked awesome.

both lowers would be a 30 minute job (total) for most welders.

In my years of boating, I have saw these fins be successful on smaller out boards and light weight boats. On large hp motors, I have saw more damage than help. I have saw more cav plate damage on the bigger hp motors. To each his own....but be aware, they will void your warranty on new motors.....

Looking at those holes it looks like the pattern for a trolling motor mount rather than a fin.

If part of the anti ventilation plate broke off and a hydrofoil was installed I can see that not being covered by a warranty. If something unrelated to anti ventilation plate became defective, and it would otherwise be covered by a warranty, I suspect the defective part would covered under the warranty. IME manufacturers are not out looking for a reason to deny a legitimate warranty claim.

Every Business, looks for any and all Reasons to deny a Warranty Claim, almost as intensely as Health Insurance Companies go out of their way to deny Coverage

I worked for one company the majority of my life and then for five plus years following that with another company after I retired. Lockheed being the first and Yamaha being the second. If anything, when in doubt, both companies erred on the side of the customer.

We have two good sized Marine stores in my area that sell and service the more popular brands of outboards. Both have signs on the wall that states use of an add-on Hydro foil could void your factory warranty! My wife's sister in law used to work at a major/popular health insurance company. When claims were filed, they were to deny the claim at least twice to see if they would try again. Often after two denials, they stop filing the claim. After 4x they would pay the claim.

A hydrofoil could void a warranty. Most likely related to damaged caused by the foil. Which generally would be the anti-ventilation plate.

I can see the use of a non Mercury propeller being used on a Mercury motor voiding a warranty claim if the propeller harms the lower unit. Shops need to have signs to warn people of that danger.

Bad news in the form of a denied warranty claim usually travels far wide and often. Over and over again thanks to the internet. Folks have a vested interest in venting while hoping to harm the company.

Good news in the form of an approved warranty claim rarely if ever leaves the house. Folks are satisfied and go on about their businesses. Rarely telling anyone.

Everyone seems to want everything. All the time. For free. If not under warranty, as goodwill.

Now the insurance companies could well be very different.

I have never had a claim denied, nor have I had a family member had a claim denied.

My father had a few (life saving) claims denied. He's still here and that's about all I care to get into with it.

As far as the doel fin, I ran one with the 3.0l in my 19 as it basically would not get on plane without it. A 3.0 in a 19 foot cuddy is about as under powered as it gets and the transom shape didn't lend itself to trim tabs. With the 4.3 it was no longer needed. Typically I've found the applications where you benefit from them you are typically severely under powered. In most cases trim tabs are going to be the better option if they can be installed.

Serious Legislation with Real Teeth in it, and Enforcement(up to and including Incarceration of the Executives of Companies) which deny Claims, is needed, but will NEVER happen in a Corporation Controlled nation
