So i got my seal kit and tried to install it today. Removed the bearing carrier, and tried to no avail to get the seals out. I went over to my landlord's house (next door) he owns a machine shop, i asked him if he had a seal puller i could use. next thing i know he is 'helping' me get the seal out and there are rollers from my now broken rear bearing all over the place. so,i have emailed bill at mastertech to get a quote on the bearing and the omc tool i need to install it. my question is, where can i get a puller to get the seals out? my manual talks about a 'slide hammer' and illustrates a puller, but i have looked around (sears, advance auto) and have yet to find anything that resembles those tools. i still need to get the drive shaft seal out and i don't want a replay of this episode.

2nd question is how, once i get the new bearing, do i get the old one out without damaging the front bearing? or is it better to just replace them both? thanks for your help. i know that there are some people here who have done this more than once :)

motor is 1981 johnson 9.9 fyi

thanks,
matt

Re: lower unit seals part 2 9.9 johnson

ok, i have done a little research and i have answered some of my questions. i know know what a slide hammer puller is, and that i can spend anywhere from $300 (sears) to $15 (harbor freight tool company) to get one.

i also have looked at my bearing carrier, and there are cutouts around the front bearing that look like they will allow me to use a slide hammer to pull the bearing, after which i can hammer out the rear bearing from behind.

so is there any reason i can't pull the front bearing and reuse it or is it better to just replace it while i am at it?

thanks

matt

Did you ruin the bearing cage/race, or just the rollers/needles fall out? If the inner race is ok, put the rollers/needles back in with grease to hold them in place until you slide the drive shaft in. You could try to split the old seal with a razor sharp chisel, or rent a slide hammer. The genaric tool companies have them also. Heat helps.

clanton,

I did indeed break the bearing race (cage, whatever it's called) so the whole thing is going to have to be replaced. I think i'm just going to get the cheap slide hammer set from harbor freight. i only anticipate using it to pull these seals and perhaps the next time i repack my trailer bearings... this is it, let me know if you think it's not heavy duty enough to get a small bearing like that out:

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=5469

thanks,

matt

I dont know if it is heavy enough. If you have to remove the other bearing, probley going to ruin it also. This is a long shot I would cook the housing in boiling water for about 1/2 hour and try gentle tap with a hard wood dowel and hammer, if you curl the edge of the bearing its ruined. You are removing the second bearing to get to the first bearing right? Been a while I had one of these apart. You also need a special tool to get the bearing back in. I looking to see your location, though if you were close I would try to help you.

i just want to get the seal and the damaged bearing out without damaging anything else. i will order the bearing and the special tool to install it. i have never used a slide hammer, what weight would be sufficient to pull a small bearing like this? otherwise i will just be using it to pull the seals.

thanks,
matt
