Lower unit

I have a 1963 10HP Evinrude Sportwin. After running the engine the lower unit oozes a brown chocolate milk looking froth. I've checked the oil inside the lower unit and it looks normal. I'm thinking it needs new seals on lower unit. Am I correct? Or is this normal?

That's probably un-burned gas and oil you are seeing. Check your spark plugs for correct gap first (very important), then check the rest of the ignition system ie: points, condensers, coils and plug wires. I believe you may need to replace some of those ignition parts if not all of them.

Pretty much normal for the old motors. Unburnt 2-cycle oil/exhaust/water will drain out after you've run the motor and pull it out of the water.

Thanks for the help. The ignition system has been inspected by a marine mechanic. Would leaning out the the high and low speed jets reduce the amount?

Also while talking to the mechanic he said that the power unit on these outboards was very strong and that their weakness was keeping the lower units together. Has that been your experience?

Leaning out the carb a bit MAY help ONLY IF it is currently running too rich. Read your plugs - if they're running black you may be able to lean things out a bit. If they're running light chocolate brown, you're right where you want to be...

A few things may help to reduce the amount of unburned fuel/oil mix: Start with the thermostat working correctly; rebuild the carburetor; use synthetic or synthetic blend TC-W3 oil; and finally, de-carbon the engine annually.
