I'm rebuilding my 1962 75 hp johnson engine which is an electric shift model. I'm currently looking at a parts motor which is a 1961 75 hp manual shift model.

my question is the lower gear case interchangeable? as mine has damage on the nose of the lower gear case.

Re: LU compatibility question

It would be easier to put your powerhead on the manual shift model, mostly because when you change over the lower unit, you'll have to install a shifter set up on it too. By doing so, you need to pull the powerhead anyway.

Ok if I were to get the manual shift motor running what would I need to change over for controls? Throttle and shifting? Or could I reuse the electric models shifter?

I believe the electric shift lower unit is set up differently. You will need to change your controls and stuff, because the controls for your electric shift model doesn't have a shift cable, since it's done through the wiring harness. It may be more cost effective, to sell your manual shift motor and buy a new lower unit housing. At least then, you can have a rebuilt lower unit with new seals and not have to worry about it for many more years.
