LU stuck in forward

[1995 pain]

~~Took the LU off tonight and replaced impeller. I had it in forward when I took it off. For some reason when I put it back on the drive gear didn't go in all the way. I wiggled the LU and prop until it got real close then bolted it down. When I started the engine I was stuck in forward. I have read a lot about this but thought I would be good as I had it in forward. I have r&r'd it till I am blue in the face I can't get the thing to get in any gear but forward. Please help!!!

What year and HP motor are we talking about?

Undo the lower unit, pull the shaft of the gear shift till it is in neutral and then replace, should try to do your LU in neutral not forward.
