Lube in my SP-A Outdrive?

OK - I looked at the Shop Manual I just downloaded for my SP-A Drive - the chart at the top says use same lube as the engine, table at the bottom says use 90W, definitely not what I'm using in my engine. Are Swedes always this confusing - wait I'm half Swedish so maybe it's me... Stuff I drained out was definitely 90W so that's what I put back in, but now I'm wondering what's "right"... Thanks again again.

The DP drives (DuoProps) use the gear lube (90W) your drive uses engine oil.
Use straight 30W. Works better than multi grades and other oddities of newer engines. Besides. when Volvo says same as engine, the assume you use what they recommend.

Not to start an argument here, but I don't understand - the SP-A Tech Data on page 172 of the drive "Workshop Manual" clearly says:

Lubrication System
Pump, type ............................................................................. Circulation pump for distribution of oil to all
lubricating points
Oil quality ................................................................................ API-GL51)
Viscosity ................................................................................. SAE 90 or 80W90
Oil quantity, approx. ................................................................ 2.6 liters (2.75 US Qts.)

I used 10W30 in the motor. Not sure what your comment about Volvo recommendation inferred?

All I can say is the manual does not reflect a lot of later service bulletins on what to use.

So - bottom line is if it has been running on 90W (boat is a '90 and I bought it this spring) should I change over to engine oil or keep running 90?

Use the proper lube.

I had the same question a while back. What lube to use? I too saw where gear lube was recommended, but most of the information said to use "same as engine", which is what I have been using. I did alot of research before I reached this conclusion. Had problems with the idea of using engine oil in a gearbox, never done that before, but that is what Volvo recommends.
