Re: Lure - one eye's??

sounds like you're describing what we call "slabs." take a look at this web page, www.magnumsandbass.com and scroll down about two-thirds, there's a picture of a slab assortment; is that what you mean?

Here's a local guy makes a good quality slab:
www.trollingnolanstackle.com
check out his TNT Shad Spoon, just got one can't wait to try it out

here's another:
www.sixoldgeezers.com/ad.htm

and, by strange coincidence, Barlow's Tackle in Richardson, Texas has about the biggest selection anywhere, plus luremaking supplies:
www.barlowstackle.com

You would love this place, and I think you would really enjoy their catalogue

here's the slabs
and here, #135 is about the only one I use anymore

here's the tapper shots one w/flash one w/o.. the flutter is the tail end .. notice the tappers.

I've seen some similar 'slabs' (as you call 'em).. much like a jigging spoon.. sorta and the like. But I'm gonna take some time and look at these things you brought up a little more.

there is something about the action of these "one-eyes'.. guys here have tried all sorts of similar baits that are available locally but, its these things that are more productive out on the Mississippi right now.. The Walleyes and large perch up here love'em bounced off the bottom.. working 'em in different ways - just depends but, used in relation to the bottom.

I'm going to look around here and see about a few of them I saw on "Barlow's link" /// you're right I love it .. just wish it was closer :( !

going to order their catalog for sure along with a closer look at those TNT Shad Spoons.

I believe Bryon will do custom colors, or probably ship 'em unpainted. Tell 'im I sent you, I go by jtexas on the fishing forum also. Won't get you a discount or anything but what the heck.

Looking at your pics, I can't tell - is that a willowleaf blade on the same split ring as the hook? Doesn't look like it could set up much of a spin like that.

Also, have you ever tried that lure without the trebles on the nose and if so, did you lose a lot of fish? Just wondered because it takes me so long to unhook the one set of trebles that I'm thinking about replacing 'em with a single. My strike-to-hookup-to-landing ratio is so close to 1:1:1 you can't measure the difference.

Re: Lure - one eye's??

Will do JT . . . If nothin' else you might get a little something in return for the referance ;)

you see it correct - the blade is directly on the split ring. I know what your getting at with it not being connected to a swivel. Might be an addition to make as well.

I'm not sure on the forward hooks JT.. I've had some Walleyes hooked on the front only so I don't know what to say there.
I did replace all of 'em with Gamakatsu and VMC hooks this past weekend.. who ever built these things used some poor quality hooks to begin with - they'd probably work fine outside of rock and gravel tho. Next time I'm out and I find fish with 'em I'll remove the front hook and see what happens.. I'll probably stick with the trebeles tho - don't fix it if it ain't broke kind of thing - ya know.

Re: Lure - one eye's??

I was chatting with a guy the other day about how fish usually eat another fish headfirst, so the fins lay down & don't get lodged in their throat (nobody knows the fishie heimlich, right?), and it ocurred to me, why not tie the line to the a$$ end of a slab and put the hooks up on its face? If they're taking it on the fall shouldn't make a difference in the presentation.

any opinions?

I have never tried that jtex but I may give that a shot just to see what happens.

Barlow I know what you mean by changing out hooks, thats why I like mine they are almost all VMC red hooks,

Here is a custom paint, favorite among many. Also has a touch of chart glitter, kinda hard to pic up the colors of the glitter on the camera. Here is a sample.
Re: Lure - one eye's??

good to see you're using quality hooks Bryon!

The baits (one-eye's) I've picked up locally appear to have Eagle Claw 374/bronze curved points.. a few encounters with hard bottom structure and you've got a bent butter knife for a hook. ;)

check your company e-mail for a request from Marshall, WI.. that'd be from some goofball around here .. I won't say any names tho.. :)

hmmm.. I guess that all depends on how they 'hit' it.. with these things as well as jigging spoons I set the hook ASAP on the first 'bump' or line twitch. Its my opinion that they're going to hit a bait (first) w/o carring too much about where the head and tail are.. most likely a reaction strike in my opinion.

would have to try it to find out if they like the action it gives 'em to see i guess...

just my .02 anywho

Re: Lure - one eye's??

hey jtexas on your ? about the head and hook end being swapped check out this message I recieved from a fisherman and happy tnt lure user from Texas Fishing Forum, he emailed me with it tonight, the tail he is talking about is a dressing he likes to add to the treble it is a jig:
Apparently the fish didn't mind the hook being on the
wrong end of my shad spoon today. Found a small
school of white bass in 35'-40' and stayed with them
for an hour before they disappeared. Caught 51 in
that time, plus a couple of legal stripers and a nice
yellow cat. Didn't have any problem with getting
hooked on the line - at least it seemed less so than
with a right-way-round one with a tail on it.
