I live in MA and I've heard of some people registering their trailers in Maine. I understand there may or may not be some issues with this but its a common enough practice that I'm interested. I live close enough to Maine that I can head up to an RMV there but I understand there are companies that do this for me. Does anyone have a personal experience that could direct me?

I can. It costs me $60 a year in MA but in ME it would cost me $20 a year.

I agree that $60 a year is ridiculous, but you will run into issues with the Environmental Police in MA with a boat registered in MA and a trailer registered in Maine. I have seen first hand the boat, trailer and tow vehicle impounded.

Humm... something is very fishy.

If I use my father's trailer (registered in VA) to haul my boat to MA, I'm going to jail?

The old saying is, it's all legal so long as you don't get caught. Many folks around here register their boats in TN because it's 30 for 3 years. Some are from KY and others are from OH and IN.

Your trying to do something illegal and want to know how some of us would do it and get away with it. No legal E here, but I know of no state which allows someone that lives in one sate to register a boat in another, unless it stays in the state most the time. The only exception to this is for documenting the boat with the USCG.

Hey try it, you might get away with it, you might not

No dingbat your not. But if you live in MA you must register your cars and trailers in MA. It is a law on the books only for the state of TAXACHUSSETTS to make money. only way around the law is if you own property in another state.

I have a feeling that most states have the same rules.

Not sure if the nice folks in ME will let you register a trailer there unless you have a residence in ME. If you do, then you are probably all set.

If not, then it sounds like it may be a lot of trouble to save $40. You probably would need to skip the Dunkin's run only a few times a year to make up the difference.

Ayuh,.... The Great state of Maine has created a business of registerin' wagons from other states cheaply,.....

But, it's aimed at Corporate wagons, not privately owned wagons,....
Ya need a corporate address in Maine to use the service,....

I had called my insurance company and they said that they would not cover a claim if I had a trailer that was registered in Maine, once I heard that, the whatever bunch of $20 bills that I might save per year was NOT worth it should something ever happen.

Pay a little now or pay a LOT more later.
