I just inherited a boat and motor and am new to the board,1960 Johnson 5 1/2 horse CD-17 but what I have read I still have some quesstions. I got the motor and changed the plugs first, second I changed the lower unit oil, the tank was missing so i went with the Wal-mart plastic and new fuel line. I want to try and start this where do I put the suction thing for the garden hose and do I have the right one? What is the oil to fuel ratio? Where is the Kill switch? and I am missing a button or dial under the pull start is a dial for rich lean but there appears to be a button missing in front of that or another twist dial? any ideas? It appears to be small,

Hi Sniper,
Oil mix - 24:1
Cooling water - use a barrel. The Wal-Mart ear muffs won't work on your motor.
If there's a kill button, it would be on the front panel. It'll be a pushbutton switch with two wires leading up under the flywheel.
Plugs - use Champion J4Cs. If you do a lot of trolling, bump it up to J6Cs. Do not use J8Cs...
For starters, don't pay any attention to the knobs on the needle valves. Remove the knobs and bottom the shafts out, gently. Then do a search on Joe Reeves' method for setting high and low speed adjustments. Then re-install the knobs front and center so you'll know when other curious hands may have fiddled with them. I believe yours has the "nested" knobs with the high speed inside the low speed knob. Might have to improvise for the missing one. They used the same snap-on connection on lots of different motors over the years.

- Scott

I don't think there was an idle-stop on those engines. That is to say, you just throttle down until it stalls.
