Hello there.

I own a Jeanneau Leader 650 with 1992 Volvo Penta 431A engine DP-A1 sterndrive installed.
She stays in salty water all year long.

Bought her 2 years ago, with engine flooded and blocked.
Rebuild engine, changed elbows, exhaust manifolds, rebored cylinders, oversized pistons/rings/bearings/
valves/seats/guides/rebuild starter and alternator.

Worked fine for 2 years.

Last month, strange noise while steering engine running.
Took engine off, took stern off, a very little bit off water in upper bellow, and fund rear oil seal output shaft installed lips forwards instead of rearwards, changed output shaft 2 rollbearings and oilseals, U-joints.

I please need to find a servicing list about all operations I should provide to this engine and sterndrive.
I read about a pressure test on the sterndrive, but I do not feel confortable to applicate 60 PSI to 18 years old oil seals.

Except routine maintenance I do not have any list of what and when parts should be inspected and remplaced.
I do not know how frequently shall I remplace bellows for exemple.
Same for water pump impeller.

I know those VolvoPenta models have been spread in the United States, less in Europe , and informations are hard to find.

Any help will be appreciate, thank you , Paul.

With those kinds of drives, the bellows and the impeller get changed every other year. The bellows are thinner than other brands. The good news is they are very easy to replace by just pulling the upper gear box.

60 is WAY too much. 15 psi max.

Hello Ron.

Your assistance did really help me, thank you again.

I have a doubt about how to install flywheel casing rear intermediate shaft oil seal.
Service manual says to install seal lips forward, grease case side.
Volvo Penta spare parts spread sheet shows seal lips backward, cv-joint side.
First solution will keep grease looked into bearing case.
But will not stop water coming from bellow to attack bearings.
Second solution will not avoid grease to leak into bellow, bur will avoid any water in the bellow to gettin bearing case.

Any clue ?

Thank you so much, Paul.

the fwd seal goes in with the lip/spring facing aft, the aft seal lip/spring faces aft.
this allows grease,on models with a grease fitting, to be pumped into the unit without forcing a seal out.
that way any excess grease simply gets forced out the aft seal and doesnt push seals out.
put both seal lips facing in and its very possible to force the seals out with hydraulic(grease gun) pressure.
