More from Drudge....

A huge power blackout hit U.S. cities spreading from New York to Cleveland and Detroit and north into Canada Thursday afternoon. In New York City, the blackout affected subways, elevators and airports, including John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports. People streamed into the streets of lower Manhattan in 90-degree heat. In Toronto, Ontario, too, workers left their offices after the blackout hit shortly after 4 p.m. EDT. Traffic lights were out throughout downtown Cleveland, creating havoc at the beginning of rush hour. There were reports of outages in New Jersey and Connecticut as well. Every prison in New York state reported a loss of power and had switched to backup generators, said James Flateau, a spokesman for the state Department of Corrections.

They are suspecting a grid problem. Is it possible to have 35 million people on the same grid spanning such a large area???

Oh, thank God somebody responded. I was beginning to think I was the last person on earth that could still get online. :D

I hope it is not terrorist related.

No liberal is going to blame Bush.

Bush is an imbecile, but he doesn't cause blackouts

Was Grey Davis in NY?

The Associated Press
Thursday, August 14, 2003; 5:20 PM

NEW YORK - A huge power blackout hit U.S. and Canadian cities Thursday, driving workers in New York and Toronto into the streets, shutting subways in blistering heat and closing four nuclear power plants in Ohio and New York state.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said there was no evidence of terrorism as a cause. "Probably a natural occurrence which disrupted the power system up there," he said, referring to a power grid based in the Niagara Falls area.

The FBI was checking into the extraordinary outages but had no immediate information about the cause, said spokesman Bill Carter in Washington. Blackouts stretched from New York City as far west as Detroit, at least.

"We have no idea how extensive it is," said an official with the Office for Emergency Management in New York City.

Hey, don't want to blame our Canadian friends, so maybe it is Bill Gate's fault - the SanLove worm did it???

Have had a few power outages around here, not sure if it is because of the grid going down, but have had a rash of transformers blowing. Fortunately I still have power, but feel bad for all that are without. I am without power enough in Ghana - not fun when you can't get to iboats!

Grey Davis wasn't in New York, but he was in Detroit recently fleecing some union bosses.

Latest report is a simple overload. The system worked as designed-shut down before major damage occurs.

I remember something like this happening in the seventies, while I grew up in NY. Major cluster "F" then, seems like an even bigger one now.

Seems like the same problem. Chain reaction in the Grid.

So Grey Davis was in Detroit.
They were affected right? He's porbably trying to convince some officials to buy power from an Enron-like company at inflated prices. Calling it a good deal.

What a mess is right. I just got home around 4, took my shower and the lights dimmed way down then went all the way out. Everthing is shut down around here which is about 80 miles south of Cleveland.

Power came back on around 6:45, but it is weird because the rest of the town and surrounding areas are still without power.

I brought back my generator from the boat for servicing, so it came in handy here to run the freezer and fridge.

Wife just tried to get a pizza, but none is to be found anywhere here. Guess she is gonna have to remember how to use the stove! :D

Mayfloat....it was closer than ya' think. I work at a power plant and I got a call from the coordinator that basically said to give him all I could which I did. We were a little nervous for a couple hours cause we didn't know if the outage was going to snowball back to our grid. It got close....real close.
