Good idea, but not exactly a new idea. I remember docks built with tires for fenders and 55 gallon drums for flotation.

Really?
someone thought drilling two holes in a tire was "making a fender" and was worthy of a video????

Tug boats have been doing this since they were invented. I can't wait to see the first post asking advise on getting 'spare tire fender' marks out of gelcoat.

I have this really nifty idea on how to use an old tire to make a swing hung from a tree. Think I'll make a youtube video on it!

Yeah, have fun with all of the black smudges on the white gelcoat.

Buying authentic screw on fenders or bumpers from places like West Marine is prohibitively expensive to do any significant section of a dock. Remember, sites like this is for newbies with little experience most of all. Unless you're exposed to tricks like this a lot, it's new info. Besides most folks would use a car tire vice a bike tire or tie rope thru the middle. I like the idea and a scuff over a weekend is better than a gouge from not having anything.

Also just to add my $0.02, fire hose is good to use for the pilings.

So why not just leave the pilings/dock unprotected and use fenders tied to the boats' cleats? Works just as well, is cheaper, and can be adjusted easily.

There are times and places when having a West Marine around is handy. My bilge pump went last year when I was on vacation and I did not feel comfortable leaving the boat docked in the water all week without a working pump. Quick trip to West Marine and a little bit of work and I was all set.

Yuup...and those drums were chemical drums! Wonder if they triple rinsed back then?
