Re: Making a Party Island

Well, first things first, I suppose: You are NEVER going to be able to please everyone, so try your hardest but don't look back with regrets. Especially when words like "association meeting" are involved. Lots of "members" take ownership where it wasn't due and feel 100% justified in their opinions, right, wrong or indifferent (which usually isn't the case). When I first moved to Florida, one of the hardest adjustments for me was dealing with Homeowner's Associations, but that's a whole different subject for it's own thread I suppose.

Secondly, and more importantly, get to the bottom of what the "legalities" of your island are and do it before you go back out on that lake. I can assure you of this, SOMEONE is checking the laws and how they pertain to your party island, probably as I type this. Don't rely of "heresay" from someone here on the internets. Call the local authorities (sheriff's office, fish & wildlife, coast guard, whoever it is) and ask them what's legal and what isn't. There's simply no logic in taking a "wait and see" approach to this as many people have been carted off to the hooscow screaming "But I didn't know!!". Remember, ignorance of the law is never innocence.

And lastly, if you happen to find out this isn't legal, then find an alternative. I say that because at the end, there won't be much left but memories, so you've got to make as many good ones as you can. Trust me on this, life is going to fill you with enough bad ones. It's up to you to tip the scales to the good. Best of luck and keep us posted.

Just do what ever you want--but be mindful of loud music & being obnoxius . do not litter! Everyone on the water is out to have fun.
You might run into problem with something you leave un attended in the middle of the lake. If you get any negative feedback show up on this!jetpack1.jpg

Re: Making a Party Island

Here is the base of the new center raft. So far the only cost I've had is for a lawn mower battery which was 30 bucks. Everything else was left over from old projects or I found for free.

I got out the amp meter and my stereo is pulling about 2 amps at a fairly loud volume. That should give me about 8 hours of play time before the battery hits the 35 percent range.

Today I'm building the speaker tower and fitting the coolers on.

I think you'll want a deep-cycle battery instead of a small starting battery for a lawnmower. The starting batteries don't like to be deeply discharged. The deep-cycle is made to be discharged multiple times, and would provide for much more than 8 hours at a 2-amp/hr draw.

To the OP - are you the only person in your 'party group' with a boat?

Why not just party and float off the shore/dock?

Seems like a lot of work on a lake that small...

How about an old beater pontoon boat? Bet you could find one on craigslist for free - no engine, destroyed seating. Strip it down to the platform, throw some cheap indoor / outdoor carpeting on top. You could mount your stereo / battery, have a large rubbermaid bin for storing life jackets and safety equipment (flares, whistle, extinguisher, lol!), add a pop up tent for shade and some pvc chairs. Pretty sure you don't need an engine to get the registration renewed; no one inspected my used boat when I bought it. Add anchor and nav lights and you have a nighttime party station too! You would now be an anchored vessel instead of a party barge.

I have been looking for a cheap pontoon for ever. I want to rebuild one from scratch. I have a few ideas that would be pretty cool. Worst looking ones here are 1500 and that's just for aluminum. No trailer furniture motor. I finished up the tower today. It actually doesn't sound half bad. Tomorrow I'll cover the tower with vinyl. I have a ton left over from recovering my boat seats. It will look great then.

don't ask these type of questions OP. take your beer, your liquor, your wacky tobbacky, and do what the **** you want. if you get in trouble, be nice, and pay the fine. Most likely the lake patrol will let you off if you invite him out next time

What about building something like THIS? The floats are the only thing that seems all that expensive.

PDF plans for the one in the center (8x8 size)

Here is the making of the platform. Its 4ft x 4ft. Just big enough for two large coolers, a garbage can, a recycling can, and the stereo tower. IMG_20120814_194151.jpg

Here it is with the tower built and on the deck with a cooler for size reference. Tonight I;m going to cover the tower with some vinyl I have laying around. the last thing to add is an antenna mast with a flag. IMG_20120815_194509.jpgIMG_20120815_194542.jpg
