Hey Patrick,

Just a little tip from a newbe. Your are going to need a lot of resin to lay up that much glass at one time. I would have several buckets measured out with resin and the appropriate amount of hardner for each bucket ready. Keep them close by and be ready to mix as needed.

I learned the hard way about mixing to much resin at one time. It will fire off faster when there is more resin. When I tried to mix like a 1/2 gallon at a time it fired before I could use half of it.

I also found using a roller like Friscoboater used I could spread alot of resin really fast. This gave me alittle more time to work with the resin.

I try to only mix between 1/4 to 3/8 of a gallon at a time. That worked best for me.

Your trasom looks great in the vids.
Keep up the good work and the VIDS.

Meet the "Wise Choice". Just a great family boat that with the guts to get you where you want to go. She's given us endless hours of skiing, fishing, and just hanging out at the beach since 1978.

LOVE IT!! Thanks for sharing... She still looks in great shape. I was thinking about adding a couple of "wooden accents" to my boat, so I'm glad you shared that. I don't want to go overboard with it, but a few touches here and there to really give it that classic/classy look.... You gave me a good idea there.. My goal in doing this is to create those same memories you have enjoyed.

good job mcraney... i wish it wasnt so darn cold so i could get out there and start grinding myself!!! i actually took 10 minutes to hop into the canopy where my boat sits and just to say hello to it.. before i knew it i had spend 45 minutes picking away at the rotten transom lol time just went by so fast! cant wait to speed up my restore...how dare you work so fast!
all kidding aside, looks very nice and im enjoying ur progress

Thanks 74; Yeah, no one looks forward to the grinding, except that you want to get started so you can get past it.... and, yes, time flies, I find its hard to get anything meaningful done unless you have at least 4 hours to really dig in. Hang in there, and keep plodding along....

Thanks Kent - Great tip!!! I'm glad you thought to chime in with that, because prepping the resin was not on my radar screen and probably would have been trying to figure that out on the fly - which is never good in this process.

350 getting ready to be placed on the pallet, which is on my new engine hoist - so I can roll it around the shop:

We also moved the old 1975 SBC 307 into the shop (may try and spruce her up a little to improve here marketability)

Great to hear your glassing in the transom this weekend! Congrats & Good Luck. If you are so inclined, splash a little beer out for the rest of us dry dockers......Sat/Sun may see some multi-tool saw action on the rubrail bolts here at our place! Weather may not cooperate, but hopefully it won't be as offensive as the grinding glass.

Yes, a round of hypothecial dos equis on me... even for the little coon in the corner rummaging through tools and scraps... Yes, I'm excited about the drive line... Spent some time with the shop owner on Thursday (he knows a ton about engines), and learned a lot... Also, spent some time in the manual yesterday.... Its finally starting to make a little sense to me..

Thanks guys... Blessed to have access to the shop space, the tools, the tractor, etc... (although I am getting weary of the drive out there)... It took all of about 45 seconds to hook that up and yank her out... Then, he scooted her around to the stop... we attached to my my little shop hoist and laid her down on the pallet... Looking forward to cleaning her up, doing some maintenance and hopefully getting her ready for the summer. I have a guy re-building the carb for me for $100 - so that's nice....

I'll probably check the compression - again, replace the valve covers and gaskets (is chrome blasphemy on these black motors?)... change the plugs, fuel filter, oil filer, and I may replace the oil pan pick up while I got her out of the boat and have access to the bottom... Just thoughts at this point...

My work plans didn't really pan out for the weekend.... Had family obligations all day yesterday.... and we got invited to do a little deer hunting this afternoon.... Robert has been dying to get into the woods (he is a blood thirsty little guy and thinks he can take down a deer with his pellet gun....) So, we may go fart around in a deer stand this p.m.

Hopefully, I will get another mid-week work session in and I'll post an update as soon as I have any more meaningful progress...

Wait in post 9/11, envelopes w/ stinky white powder NOT a good idea through the mail:facepalm: How's about you just throw some baby powder in the air & walk into the cloud, & we'll call it good!

Here are some photos of our 1978 Chris Craft Lancer. She's powered by a 225hp Chevy smallblock, and a Volvo Penta 280 drive. It's been very reliable family boat for the past 33 years, but I have some work to do in the spring. I have a rotten port side stringer and the distributor needs replaced.

Great job PM on the solving of the transom and install. You are maknig some excellent progress.

I am with Decker. that is exactly what i did in the summer when the temps were good and i was glassin the transom and stringers. i actually would pump out 3 containers with resin and then set 3 syringes with the MEKP one right next to the other, as i got done with one i would pour it into my pot add the mekp, measure out the next batch and mix away. this made a one man job much easier and faster.

Yeah, that's nice... Unfortunately I'm out of chips and have to check. Although jas did email me a sc holiday being sold for salvage about 15 miles from my house... Somewhat tempting.. No longer just Kool aid offerings... They have deployed their proprietary Starcraft radar technology to locate deals in my area..Never seen a metal Starcraft in my life...and suddenly one shows up for sale in my back yard.....I think they had it "planted" down here...

Ya better check:
your shop for a web cam

and all your water sources for an add-on kool-aid adpater

Can't argue w/ the less grinding benefi.... There's that voice in my head again............. MBS strikes again....

Of course, you know a tinny is much easier to recycle, and you don't have to use a chainsaw to cut it into garbage can sized chunks!
