Mangled prop, need help!

I took my boat out yesterday and ran into something bad (not a good way to start Memorial Day weekend). I was able to drive back to the ramp, but the propeller was completely mangled. I would like to replace it myself if possible but don't know where to start as far as ordering a correct replacement. The boat is a 19' 1989 Stingray I/O Mercruiser 5.0 L if that helps any. The current propeller was aluminum with 3 blades. Is this hard to replace or can someone who can follow instructions do it on their own?

Not exactly rocket science to remove a prop. Remove the nut and pull it off noting the position of the lock, nut, washers, etc. Take a picture of each step if you are really mechanically challenged. Check the hub of the prop for a name and part number or numbers that indicate diameter and pitch (looks like 14x23 or something similar). In this example it's a 14 inch diameter prop with 23 inches of pitch.

Re: Mangled prop, need help!

Thanks for the quick responses. I have managed to remove the mangled prop, and found some sort of identification #. 48-832830a45. I have found a matching prop on e-bay , but now am wondering if i should go with something different or stay with the same aluminum prop. I would say that I am more concerned with acceleration at this point than top speed. I rarely run it WOT anyway. I'm curious if a different type prop would suit my needs better.

More information on current prop: 14.5" ,19 pitch, 3 blades, aluminum.

I think I have confused myself now. I checked my engine and it says engine rotation is LH. When I look up the prop that came off of my boat , the number seems to signify a RH prop. What am I not understanding here?

If you boat in mangle prone water, I'd stick with aluminium. Cheap fix or replacement. Get the old one fixed and use it for spare.

Re: Mangled prop, need help!

The motor probably is a left hand rotation. But the prop probably is a right hand roatation. Remember, the driveline goes thru 2, 90* turns. 2 chances to reverse the rotation. Auto enigines normally turn counterclockwise (standing at the rear of the motor and looking forward at the flywheel). It's most common for I/O & outboard props to turn clockwise.

You can get your old prop repaired to as good as new condition by taking it to a prop repair place. Often, it is better than new becuause they may do a beter job of balancing it.

Also, you should always carry a spare prop along with the tools to change it out on the water. Consider it equivalent of your spare tire in your car. You never want to run your boat with a damaged prop...even slightly damaged...as an out of balance prop can ruin your lower drive.
