Hey all,
Well in my process of going through this new to me old boat, I removed one of the risers (port) to check its condition... New to the I/O world and have been reading a ton so figured I don't want to chance having any issues since I have no idea how old the risers/manifolds are and they very well could be original to the boat. Here's some pics. Don't look to good do they? Water passages look pretty well closed up. Should I replace em?

Riser

Manifold

Haven't taken the manifold off yet nor the starboard side. Figured I'd start here and get an opinion from you guys then get some parts if needed.

Any recommendations on which parts and where to buy? These are pricey from what I understand so any recommendations would be great... I'm guessing Volvo OEM would be the way to go?

Thanks as always for everyone's input.

Ayuh,.... Ya gotta clean 'em up, Before you can inspect 'em,....

Get a flat file, 'n clean the gasket surfaces,....
use it or something to poke out the water passages abit,...

All that can be seen in yer pictures is random rust, 'n old gasket material,...

There done! Mine were like that , but I bought new ones. About $1,000 for manifolds & risers!
Try to buy Volvo if you can afford them! Better safe than sorry!

I'm replacing mine after 14seasons of 6/7 months each season in the salt water!
I think you might get a few more years out of yours, your choice.

Re: Manifolds and Risers - guess I'm replacing??

So I bit the bullet and decided to replace the manifolds and risers. Got the package today; went with OEM on all from iboats. Help me out here though.... The new risers don't have the little extensions on the bottom for the cap end on one side and the hose on the other to the tstat??? Whats the deal? The old manifolds have the nipples built in as part of the casting but the new ones don't and have threads on both sides for fittings??? uggh!!

Am I missing something? Do I have to buy fittings now for this? I'd think for the cost, they'd include it. Why isn't it setup like the originals?

Thanks in advance

Glad to see you bought new! Very important that manifolds & risers have good H20 flow!
I don't think Volvo makes manifolds with nipples on the ends any more. You will have to get
ends & elbow fittings. Make sure there brass or bronze ones. Apply Permatex high temp silicone to the
threads before installing them. Not sure what you mean about the risers. Mine had a bunch of threaded holes I
filled with brass plugs of different sizes. I also have a heat exchanger that connects to the Stat via a hose. I have hoses
that come off the heat exchanger to the manifolds. maybe post a few photos of your riser question? Good Luck!

Thanks for responding Wolf. Yeah did some more research last night and guess I'll have to find some brass hose barb fittings. Figured it would've been provided like the plug but guess not. Didn't have a question on the risers unless I messed up in my post... I'm clear on the risers. Thanks again.

Re: Manifolds and Risers - guess I'm replacing??

Thanks for the info Bruce. Yeah the old manifolds have the nipples as part of the casting, no fittings. That's what threw me off when I opened the packages and found no nipples and only a brass drain plug. In any case I think I'm going to find some brass hose barb fittings. Don't want to do an elbow, would like to come straight out. Looks like it's 3/4" npt to 1" ID Hose and I can either find a plug for the rear or use the rubber cap from the old one. Will see if that works.
Will post back when I get the parts

Re: Manifolds and Risers - guess I'm replacing??

Honestly I'm annoyed at the fact that when I look under the correct model # in the volvo penta store, the diagrams show the manifolds with the nipples as part of the casting and they even have the rubber plugs available which I ordered thinking I would receive exactly what was pictured and exactly the same casting # as my old manifolds; no mention of separate nipples and plugs that have to be sourced. Instead I receive something different and now have to scramble to figure out what to install in 4 locations on the manifolds.... More parts and very annoyed that this isn't mentioned anywhere in the volvo store and there's no one to even reach out to so that this can be corrected and the next guy won't have the same issue.

Exhaust 4.3GLPNCA, 4.3GLPNCB, 4.3GLPNCS, 4.3GSJNCC, 4.3GSJNCS, 4.3GSPNCA, 4.3GSPNCB, 4.3GSPNCM, 4.3GSPNCS, 4.3GIPNCACE, 4.3GIPNCBCE, 4.3GIPNCMCE, 4.3GIPNCSCE - 7797210 - Volvo Penta

Ok done ranting. Overall though, I'm a bit disappointed in the volvo store lately. Prices are decent but the communication isn't the best and now this problem has me thinking I may go elsewhere to buy my parts.

If you look at later models of engines, same part number shows the newer design. Looks like they don't update the older drawings.

Re: Manifolds and Risers - guess I'm replacing??

Holy PIA!!! Is there an easy way to get the old gasket material off?? Do I have to remove the studs? I got a gasket scraper but it's not doin much and hard to get at with the studs in the way.

Please tell me there's some miracle solution I can spray on and the stuff will fall right off??
Help!! Should I use a right angle grinder? Kinda sketched about using anything with any power...

Thanks in advance

Re: Manifolds and Risers - guess I'm replacing??

I have the same risers and manifolds on order and am waiting for delivery. My old manifolds also have the nipple hose connections on both sides and you just slide the hoses right on. I checked my new manifolds and they only have the holes on side. Nobody told me anything about brass fittings that needed to be purchased!! Could you post pics of what fittings you bought so we can get an idea. Also I got my studs off with a small pipe wrench and plan on using the new bolts that my kit comes with.
You can probably use a razor blade scraper once the studs are removed.

Re: Manifolds and Risers - guess I'm replacing??

Thanks for the pipe wrench tip Soreal53... Got the old ones out and ordered some new studs as well. Much easier access with the studs removed. Port side came off almost perfect with no leftover gasket material. Starboard side much worse. Working at it, slowly but surely with a razor scraper, some permatex gasket remover and 80 grit sandpaper. Getting there.

Here's a pic of the fittings I picked up...

Part number for the elbow

part number for the plug

Thanks to Bruce for pointing me in the right direction! Annoying that the diagrams and part selection isn't updated to reflect redesign of parts. Oh well.

Having to deal with a small oil leak now so not going to finish the manifolds and risers until I deal with that...

Further, While your manifolds are off the engine, replace your spark plugs! It's much easier!
I would do the spark plugs wires too, that is if there old. Your photo of the engine looks like there in
need. Your engine will thank you!

Dood, bummer on the manifolds and risers. I can see you're on the right track, just sucks to spend money so quickly...it least you're good for a while.

Us fresh water guys are so fortunate in regards to corrosion...my manifold and risers have almost no rust...

Re: Manifolds and Risers - guess I'm replacing??

Wolf, yes I'm doing plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I don't know how old they are so am going to replace them. All of it looks old. I also just found (started another thread) that apparently the wrong plugs where in the motor. Much easier to get to with the manifolds outta the way.

Yeah Brett, feel like I'm hemoraging out of my wallet!!! And now with this oil leak in the pan, I'm bummin out. Gonna do what I can to try and fix temporary so I can at least run it a bit this summer and think about fixing it right in the fall. Not gonna be using it much anyway cause I'm in the middle of buying a house and moving.

There should be enough room to drop the pan and replace the gasket? Tight, but doable?

Re: Manifolds and Risers - guess I'm replacing??

Thanks on the house. Best part is there's 2 lakes within 15 min drive to the ramps.

You think there's enough room to drop and change out the oil pan??

Nope,... I doubt it'll clear the oil pump,....
