Manual # 6 for an Alpha One SS?

Hello all,

Just got a new boat and am ordering bellows and a shift cable for the outdrive (serial number 0C351998). I looked it up- seems to be an Alpha One SS. Can I still order just "Alpha One" bellows/cable? What is the difference between the two?

Also, does anyone now where I can get the right manual, I believe it's #6?

Thanks,

-Tom

Wow, I will have to ask the seller again. I looked it up in the Mercruiser Alpha ID and History PDF supplied on iBoats. I haven't picked the boat up yet, it is still at the sellers house, just wanted to order parts today. He must have looked at the wrong serial number.

The outdrive is on a 17' Invader Bowrider with a 3.0 L Mercruiser 130 hp in it from 88. So this is an Alpha one Gen one then?

That was not supplied by iboats. I'm the one that put that file together from information from service and Mercruiser training manuals.
That file only gives ranges, not what a specific serial number is for. I looked up the serial number on an old dealer program I have on my computer, that's how I know what specific item that number goes to.

BEFORE you start ordering parts, get the boat and look it over yourself. NEVER go by what a seller says. Verify first.

Chances are, you will have a lot more wrong than you were led to believe.

I looked over the boat for a hour before I bought it, thats really all it needs, that and some tinkering with the gas gauge that does not currently work. I saw the bellows and shift cable myself, I did not take his word for it. I just forgot to write down the serial numbers. He stopped using it when he noticed a rip in the drive shaft bellow so hopefully the u joints are okay. I got a new gimble bearing anyway, why not replace while i'm there!

Thanks for putting that PDF together. This site is my go to for everything boating and has helped me out countless times!

P.s. What are the up grades or different parts that make a 3.0 L a 140 hp instead of a 130 hp? Easy swap of carbs or other upgrades?

When this boat was new it did not have an Alpha One "SS". Below is what was registered with merc and installed in a 1988 17' Invader.
ENG: 0B948568 430S000AS MERCRUISER W/O PS 3.0L ALPHA
DRV: 0B980978 5010198AS MERCRUISER ALPHA 1.98:1
TRN: 0C351998 6010000AS MERCRUISER ALPHA

It's a game of worthless numbers. The 140 was crankshaft HP, the 130 is propshaft HP. Same engine.
Even if it was a real 10 hp, that would get you about 1 mph at top end. Nothing more.

Thanks Don and Fun Times, that makes more sense. I thought that the engine should be the same hp with the same displacement. Excited to get it in the water, thank you for all of the help!

Bond-o,

It is indeed Toddy Pond in Orland, just east of Bucksport. I have the log cabin in the mouth of the second lake on the left. Glad to hear some folks are from around my area! There are a lot of cool boats from around the area, and a lot of abused ones at that.

Chemo is beautiful, next time you're on toddy stop in for a beer, I owe all of you a beer or two for the help, plus I would love to show off the new boat!
