Manual trim

I have a 1998 Mariner 135 Optimax, that runs great. My power trim was working both up and down, just the other day. Now my unit (& I'm talking outboard here) is now stuck in the up position. I believe I have an electrical problem, since the trim motor will raise the unit, but I not lower it. I can't hear anything either.

How stupid is it to manually lower the unit? Will it drop like 500# motor, or will the pressure be released gradually letting the motor down?

My thinking is that if I could lower in some, I might be able to get the trim motor to work going down as well.

Any comments & remarks are encouraged. Thanks, Bum

Re: Manual trim

(Edit)

Seriously, swap the trim relays and see if the trim goes down and not up, if it does, you need a new relay. Otherwise, find the manual release valve and lower it by hand. It should come down slowly enough to manage.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Re: Manual trim

your best bet to rule out any electrical problem would be to trace the circuit with a voltmeter. they are fairly inexpensive to get.

start by turning the key to the ON position, then trace back the wiring with the voltmeter starting at the trim switch, and work your way to the trim motor. this will tell you definately what electrical component is defective.

Re: Manual trim

DILLIGAF & TRACKER_GUY THANKS!!! I really appreciate your comments. The relay switch was the problem. I was able to just "flick" the relay switch and the trim engaged. I will replace the switch. Anything I can do to minimize the corrosion of this switch? Would spraying with WD40 be a good idea? Thanks again!
