Re: Marijuana-Legal Med or not

well it does help some sleep, some with pain, ladies with that time of the month etc. I like your other thread on this better more to the point! And yes I have smoked it, I personally don't see a problem with it. That guy you passed on the way to work that was running 5 under the posted speed limit was probably high. There are places and times it should not be used, like any other drug, including alcohol!

A lot of controlled substances are legally prescribed. Opiates, Codiene, barbituates, amphetamines, etc.

Why should marijuana be treated any differently if a physician believes it will help a patient?

Because

"for every symptom that pot is claimed to treat, there is an existing medication that addresses the simptom and/or cause better"

That little gem of a quote come from a speaker at the local grade school two weeks ago on a presentatio of drug use in our local school system. My daughter is 6 years old, and they are already educating the parents of kindergarden children to be on the lookout for drug use.

I was a teen 70's. I know what drug use is all about.

When all is said and done, I can not think of one drug that was taken "recreationally" that has made my life better or me a better person.

I am not richer, I am not healthier, I am not smarter, I am not socially elevated, I am not better off in any way because of recreational drug use.

But according to what I read, my risk of cancers is higher, my lung capacity is decreased because of drug use.

Many drugs that are/were used/abused recreationally and destructively can be used to treat specific ailments or conditions temporarily and effectively, Mark.

I frankly don't know about marijuana, I will leave that to the medical professionals.

In my lifetime I have been given (by physicians)opium in the forms of paregoric and morphine, codiene and other synthetic narcotics with very beneficial temporary results.

I don't think the results of recreational use are a useful test of medicinal applications.

I grew up befour "the twisted era" never used the stuff. After 1 major neck surgery 1 back surgery, 5 bypasses and 8 stints , sometimes the pain gets a little much, I never sleep over 2 hrs at a strech (cant pain wont allow it) I tryed it, yea I could sleep fitfully ,with Walt Disney cartoons running through my head. I foun it made me like most of the rest of the potheads I know, Io lazy to work. So I dont use it anymore. I guess like JB said legalize it(medically), that is probably better for some than the pain.

There is a guy introducing legislation to legalize medical marijuana... the idiotic part behind it is they are not providing a rule on how to get the maryjane... They are just saying, yeah, a doctor can presrcibe it to help such n such so if you get caught with it... produce the doctors note and you're good. That just means you get some liberal doctor that prescribes it freely "Go to this doctor if you need a Pot doctors excuse."

Sean

That is absolutely not true. I qualify for medical marijuana but I have no plans to sign up. If I have a bad migraine my choices are Zomig, who's side effects include a pain in the neck nearly as bad as the migraine, extreme sleepyness, dizzyness, confusion, and I'm sure they'll come out with a study sometime that says it kills you. Or I could take a handfull of Excedrin and let the acetomenaphin kill my liver and get addicted to the caffeine causing more headaches. Or I could get stoned with almost no side effects.

The same is true for many other ailments and the medicines used to treat them. How many medicines are there with almost no side effects? Almost none. When eaten, marijuana makes you high, and I guess you could consider that a side effect, but once it wears off absolutely no damage has been done. Few other medicines can say the same thing. I agree that smoking it causes alot of unhealthy side effects, but most medical users don't smoke it.

And finally, why the hell should anyone care if someone else uses it as a prescription medicine? If you don't want to use it that's fine, but it's not your business to say a sick person can't use it to treat their illness, especially if a highly trained medical doctor agrees that it will help. It certainly doesn't make a patient any more incapacitated than most other prescriptions.
