hello everybody im ready to get into marine mechanics. I have been in mechanics my whole life mostly working on farm tractors, pick up trucks and semi tractors and pretty much everything in between. I have some experince working on boats. What i am wondering is whether i should attend a school or if i would be better off working at a marina and working my way up. I have checked out marine mechanics institute and it seems like a good program but kind of pricey and long. The program is 51 weeks and costs 24k. Im not sure if its worth it considering i already have been in mechanics my whole life. Any suggestions on what i should do?

$24k is a lot of moolah. A lot in OJT that you don't get in school, like training in "hard knocks survival". Having spent several thousand hours in the classroom and who knows how much moolah, there are alternatives. In your case, getting the right company with the right employees to employ you can certainly pay off. Also you don't have to go through the gate: nice degree, but HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE DO YOU HAVE......er ah well sir, er ah, er ah.

as a marina owner i only hire mech with mech ability the foundation of a good mech is a tallant and cant be tought its like some people can play a gutair and some cant if you like what your doing and you have a nack for it the i would start on the ground floor and woork your way up if the marina thinks your worth it they will send you to the schools they want. remeber you have 2 ears and 1 mouth do twice as much listening and half as much talking and respect your elders and you will have no problem makeing a carrer

I went to MMI, and although it did help me, and got me the job i have today, i dont know if it would be worth it for you. i barely feel it was worth it for me. it just so expensive and i feel like you mostly learn the basics of each type of motor. i have learned a lot more in my first 3 years actually on the job than i ever did at MMI. if you are very mechanically inclined and have experience workin on other engines, you might do better to just get on somewhere and work your way up.
