Marine Tex to Fill Holes

Will Marine Tex take care of the holes and leaks on a Mahogany Wood Boat. It is a 1962 Johnson Wood Boat. Want to take it out to sea but want to make sure I will be allright and not sink?<br />Thanks for any Advice

John - Yes Marine Tex will fill holes, cracks and darn near anything else. It is great stuff.<br /><br />You may not want to use it however. When Marine Tex cures it is like steel. It will not expand or contract. Most wooden boats will seal themselves after sitting in the water for a while. The wood absorbs enough water to expand enough to seal minor leaks. Many owners of wooden boats will use caulking before launching for the first time of the season. Caulking has some give to it.<br /><br />I hope you get more feedback on this as I'm a plastic boat person.

Holes can be plugged with wood and glued in with epoxy.<br /><br />For caulking...If it is a glued/molded ply boat or edge nailed strip plank you may be able to get away with using marine tex. <br /><br />If it is a planked boat do NOT use marine tex or anything that cures hard. It prevents the wood from expanding and can damage the boat. A good single part polysulfide is the best way for most...and cotton under that if filling between planks.

Have info on a Canadian Epoxy based material that flexes a little. Works great for boat caulking etc.<br /><br />Will post it when I get home.
