The id tag isn't on the motor, how do I tell what year it is?

A serial number should also be stamped on the block somewhere... Either the top of the block for the earlier models or on an ali plug on the side of the engine, towards the bottom of the block...

I know it's somewhere in the late 80's looking at pictures on google.

I'll have a look at the block tomorrow.

Here's the only hand stamp number I could find stamped on the block. There is a number on one frost plug but it's painted over.

062788 1

Is there a certain number of digits it's going to be? All the other numbers were casted, probably just part numbers.

That looks very close... There will be a number in the blank space... However, I have run every combination of digit in the blank space and only come up with a 3.5 hp engine... Check the number again...

If the start of the number is right, then that's looking like about 1980/81.

That's all the numbers, they were located just before the transfer ports on the right from the back of the boat.

So am I looking for a 8 digit number? Would they stamp it in a un seen area(behind the starter or something)?

Unlikely.. I have only seen serial numbers stamped on the top of the engine block, between the cylinder banks.. and on a 'freeze plug' looking disc.

There is a number on one frost plug but it's painted over. Can I use paint striper to get the paint off or should I just sand my finger tip off?

I'd use paint stripper.. If you sand, you could sand the numbers off....

I striped the paint off the plug and found nothing but a W. What's next? Is there a way of telling by wiring, certain parts or part numbers?

Re: Mariner 175 id

We can start narrow down the search by looking at various parts, yes... But it's a long and slow process.

If you have a digital camera and can take photos of various parts of the engine, then I can help identify them....

We can start with the cylinder heads... Are the cover plates on the heads bolted on, or cast as one piece?

The heads are one piece. No covers and no signs of one being there, if that's what you ment. It's got a red flywheel if that means anything.

Ok ... that puts it as post 1987.... are the heads 'lost foam' cast or die cast?

Can you see a number on the carbs?.. It should be something like WMH...

Re: Mariner 175 id

The heads are sand cast and have a rough face, not smooth like a carb casting.

I'll have to make a list of other things to look for, it's dark over here (Canada). I'll get a bunck of pic of of it too.

Any other parts you need numbers from?

The heads were never sand-cast... Have a close look... Do they look like styrene foam?

I have to get pics tomorrow so that you can see the motor for your self.

Is there any other areas you need close ups of aside from the heads?

The numbers on the carbs... Look for something like WMH... sometimes on the mounting flange, sometimes on the front flange...

It's not easy to come up with a year without the serial number... It can be done, as we are about to prove...

The marina either don't know how, or don't want to spend the time...

The other possibility here is that the engine has had a new powerhead at some stage. Which would explain the lack of serial numbers... That is going to make things really interesting!

Chris........
Look forward to the pics and the carb number
