Hi There,

I would really appreciate if I can have some advise on this. Someone is selling this outboard and I want to buy it as a present for my dad's boat when he goes fishing. Is Mariner 25 probably made at the beginning or mid 90's?

Good News - it runs and it runs pretty smoothly in my non-technical estimation - the gears engage well too. Water comes out from the side, no funny noises. The engine inside looks tidy greased up joints etc.

Bad News - there is a leak through a tiny crack through a small rectangular box inside the engine casing. It is the rear-most 'plate' and looks like it is held on with 6 bolts/nuts. It is not a big crack but a crack non-the-less and a small quantity of warm water comes out from one of the bolts that holds the box casing. I have no idea if this sort of thing can be welded/filled or part replacement? Anu advise will be greatlty appreciated.

Wow,

Thanks diaric for your help and prompt reply. From the diagram you forward me, the water appears to be coming from one of the holes (where a bolt is going through) from part 14 or part 47. who ever is at the back of the engine when you lift the top cover.

Nevertheless, in your opinion and with a leak like that can it be just a simple case of getting the appropriate part replaced and fixed i.e maybe a gasket therefore, worth considering buying it? or is it BLR? The issue of mechanic I can deal with if I know the engine is more or less ok and can be fixed. I have uploaded a picture of how the engine looks like.

Anyway, I'll have a better idea this afternoon UK time as the owner will be posting me some pictures with the trouble area shown.

In the meantime, any hints of what needs to be done on it will be great.

Hi There,

I have put the pictures in. I have a bigger version of them for anyone who mau be intrested. From the pictures it can be seen that there is a tiny crack in the casing - you can hopefully see. the crack is adjacent to one of the bolts - I'm no mechanic but I reckon that bolt may have been overtightenend? It is not parts 14 or 47 as I originally thought. Sorry.

However, from the diagram diaric send it appears that at least the part 27 1028-8282A1COVER ASSEMBLY needs replacing, I am sure with the associated gasket + labour.

I should be able to source the parts but I hope is not anything else. Any thoughts?
