Hi I have a Mariner 30 hp mid 80 serial 30m 689s 009915
I have taken gear housing off to find the small tube is in two parts so I need to order one of those but my question is about the gear selector. I thought I needed to disconnect this before removing the LU but as I did the top part was already loose. Now I can see where it needs to be connected up the leg but how on earth do I get there. Will I need to remove engine from leg and bracket and if so which manual would be best as I have never got this deep with an outboard.

Thanks in advance Neil

You need to buy a Factory shop manual for your particular engine. Don't buy an after market manual that covers so many models, but get the one the Manufacture uses for just that engine. It will walk you through everything you need to know and do for your engine with pictures and step by step procedures...

Near as I can tell from my after market manual the upper end attaches to the arm probably under the cowl in the belly pan area.
Part of the shift lever assembly.
Normally the shift rod is un hooked at the bottom by releasing the lock nut and coupler nut.
A factory manual is an excellent suggestion.

I'm not a Mariner guy just have had lots of motors
Isn't the lever assembly near or under the lower part of the powerhead. Look at the shift lever perhaps move it a little look for the various
parts of the lever assembly. If it is indeed within the leg you may have to separate the powerhead and leg.
It appears the lever attaches to a shaft with a lever(cam) on the end there is an off set link from the cam to another shaft with a arm on each end.
One arm is removable the rod appears to connect there. It seems like these are held in place with what I call a press on washer and roll pins.
The Yamaha 30 prior to 87 appears the same.

Ok thanks again . To separate them is it just the bolts on the underside of the cowling . There looks like there is 6 in total. I think I need to take these out as the two rubber mounting bolt heads have also broken off.

Thanks again

It hooks up behind carb, remove carb as you broke the pin when it dropped down on number #20

Only thing I evan think of is if that's a plate it may be removable.Perhaps fastened from outside.
Do you feel the shift assembly is under that plate? If there is anything there you will probably need two hands to get things together.

After some time it became clear that the powerhead did have to come off aswell as most of the engine. So on strip down most of the rubbers and engine mounts had perished and bolts corroded . After a few phone calls the prices of these parts are very expensive. The two mounts are ?61 EACH.

Has any one got any where they use that may be cheaper as the parts I need are nearly as much as the motors worth.

Thanks again
