I have a 1987 Mariner 30 ELO, I bought the engine new and to this point the only issue that has ever come up was the choke knob broke, but now when I attempt to start the motor it will kick over run for 5 seconds and die, if I pull the choke halfway out it will run for quite awhile and then die, and on 2 occassions the motor took off running at max rpm and would not shut off with the key off, to kill the engine I pulled the choke all the way out, what I have done,
1. new plugs
2. new wires.
3. cleaned all battery connections
4. completely drained the fuel and oil system,
refilled with new product and got full pressure
to the system (no change in behavior)
5. disconnected battery and started manual
(no change)

so now I have ordered a carb rebuild kit, my question is, am I on the right track to resolving this issue

Thanks
Don
