My mariner 3cyl 60hp is fine when we first head out on the harbour. We can run full throttle fine but once we idle then go to take off again its like it starts to run on 2 cylinders. push throttle fully open and it just wont get up on plane. we take the plugs out give them a clean and off it goes all fine again. The plugs are not overly fouled, usually just have a drop or 2 of oil on them. Have replaced plugs. Fuel and carbs are fine (I think?) am guessing it may be an electrical prob. Could it be a plug lead or an intermittant power pack prob? I just need somewhere to start as marine maechanics around here are really bodgy and charge a motza.
Cheers

Hi Tim,

You may be ignoring an important sign, as you should have (almost) no fouling and certainly not by amounts forming a drop. You ask for a starting point and I'd suggest you

a) get a manual (link on this site or workshop manual from ie. maxrules.com)
b) check your fuel supply and carb tuning as it sounds as if you are getting way too much fuel at idle (warm engine). Check choke as well.
c) check your oil mix ratio as the drops could be excess oil
d) compare plugs immediately after the error occurs to find out if the error stems from one particular cylinder

Unless you are experienced in these matters, wait until the manual arrives. It'll walk you through fuel, ignition and more in a step-by-step manner and even offer troubleshooting sections.

If you have an inductive pickup timing light, you can test for spark while the motor is running. Test each sparkplug lead, one at a time. If the light flashes, the sparkplug is firing. If each is firing okay, then move onto the fuel system. (I'm assuming your compression is good.)

Better yet get an inexpensive spark tester at an auto parts store and check that you have a strong spark, it should jump about 3/8 inch or more. It does sound like you are dropping a cylinder. You need to find out if its spark or too much or too little fuel.
