Ok, i know there are plenty of people on here that are not fans of either company. I have an intex excursion with mods (hard floor, seats) but I'm not completely sold on it. So.... I want to upgrade to one of these two, either the mariner 4, for which i already have the motor mount and can just re-cut my excursion floor to fit and get it for under $250. Or.....go all out and get the whole sea eagle fisherman package for around $500. They seem to be of the same quality but the mariner has the rock guards and inflatable keel. I'm using a minn kota endura 30#and have no interest in moving to a gas motor. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

MrDrH99: We seem to be in a very similar situation. For the last 2 years I have been using a Sevylor HF360, their biggest and best, with a number of mods (hard floor, raised swivel fishing seats and work platform). After multiple failures of their newly designed valves, I started looking for an upgrade as well. I too narrowed it down to the Sea Eagle 9 and the Intex Mariner 4. After much review, which did include price, I concluded the Mariner 4 would be my next boat. This Saturday, another valve failed on my current boat and I placed my order. It arrives tomorrow.

A couple points you might not know: Aside from the price difference, and some things you mention, the Mariner 4 comes with a semi-rigid floor that is removable. It and the boat each weigh in the 40 lb range. All reviews are on the 2008 model (gray w. yellow & black trim). A new model is out for 2013. The trim design is slightly different and red replaces the yellow. Concerned about other differences, I called the company and was assured that nothing else had changed. I specificaly asked about thickness and quality of the material and was assured that was all the same.

I have only ever seen the Mariner 4, but that was years ago. Hands down I chose the Mariner 4. Good luck!

Before I spent $500 on the sea eagle I would order one of these
Red Star Buccaneer II 500 Z Ray Series Inflatable Sport Boat IN-B2500 - iboats

In addition you dont have to use gas
I have a 11ft Zodiac running on Propane

Lehr Propane Outboards - iboats

I like the idea of the buccaneer....I'm very tempted to spend the extra $. my excursion doesn't seem to handle the constant inflating/deflation /packing /lugging etc etc process very well. I'm afraid of the same for the mariner. Copper please let me know how you like yours.

Buccaneer is out....i need at least 4 air chambers, buccaneer and my excursion has 3, But the mariner has 5. So, that's another mark for the mariner.

Another question, anyone have any ideas on how to transport these things inflated without a trailer?

MrDrH99: I don't have mine yet, but on the Amazon site for it, some people have uploaded personal pix (~40) and one of them shows it strapped to the roof. You might consider that.

Re: mariner 4 or sea eagle fishermans package

My Mariner 4 arrived today! First Impressions:

Dispite their advertizing, Amazon sent the 2013 model boat i.e. red, not yellow trim, and the solid plastic motor mount. I am happy in both cases. The boat supposedly has only changed trim color, so why not get the latest? The motor mount, though not marine grade plywood, just looks nicer and more durable.

Having familiarized myself with any negatives in the reviews, I focused on those areas first. The oars have been described as short and light weight. While I can't speak to the length yet, they appear to very solidly made. Perhaps these have been upgraded, but nothing I saw inspired any concren in that regard. The floor slats, while solid, are inserted in a fairly flimsy sleeve-like bottom, and do have a tendancy to fall out, when not installed. This could definitely do with improvement. For my needs (raised swivle seats) a solid floor will have to be made. The material throughout the oat looks good and solid and the 4 Boston Valves are actually recessed! They are also solidly made, particularly when considering the competition's new valves. Quite impressive! The seats are so-so, apparently made well enough and comfortable, but they sit low in the boat. Again, I intend to custom make new ones. The hand pump works well enough, particularly given its size but I will still use my electric pump to do most of the filling, and only top it off with the hand pump. The owner's manual that comes with the boat seems to function more to give safety advice than any sort of assembly instructions e.g. there are several warnings not to over inflate and by each valve there is a line marked out to be 10 cm, but I can only assume how it is intended to be used - put a ruler beside it and if the line is 'stretched' to longer than 10 cm, I guess you are over inflated. The manual gives no clue. As photos illustrate, there are 2 pole holders, one on the back left and one on the front right. This positioning is great if there are 2 in the boat, but a 2nd for the person steering the boat would be appreciated. I often swap out a light weight casting rod for a slightly heavier one for trolling. This is minor.

The other detail that just jumps out at you, in addition to the aparent quality, is the size of the thing! My previous inflatable, the Sevylor HF360 is 1.5' longer, overall, but this boat is actually 1.5' longer inside! The tube size obviously accounts for this and is why the former is rated to hold 1,200 lbs, while this one holds 880lbs. But what a difference. I regularly took my 12' boat out alone and the fit was good, though tight with 2 adults fishing. Sitting alone in this one, admittedly in my living room, it feels positively huge, and I get no feeling of a shorter overall length. I would imagine it to be spacious even with another fishing adult in it.

I plan to take tomorrow off and take it on its maiden voyage on a local lake.

So far, the Intex Mariner 4 easily met or beat all my expectations. I'll report back on anything I learn after being on the water.

Thats awesome Copper, I have the Intex Excursion 5 so I can relate to the boston valves, they are nice, the excursion also has 4 rod holders. My main issue with my excursion is the single layer pvc material. Other secondary issues are the floor and the overall size, trying to transport this thing is a chore, however, I believe I will try transporting it fully inflated on the roof rack of my blazer. But, what I really need is the 5 air chambers. I'll be looking forward to the review of the maiden voyage!

Also, as far as the composite motor mount goes, I think it is far superior to the older ply wood mount, so far it has worked fantastic!
