can any one help plaese
i went out on sunday and the idiot that was supose to be making the outboard safe did every thing right but tighten it to the boat.
any way it fell off and went under the water and got well and truelly soked.
now then it started after a lot of work and wd40.it ran ok for some time and then it started to mis fire abit and i came to a stop the motor cut out when i tried to start it it wouldnt start.
got it back home and blew the carbs out dried every thing i could get at put new spark plugs in and tried to fire it up.
after turnig it over for 5 minutes it starts trying to fire up and back fireing all the time but will not start at all.
it looks as if the spark is abit weak shouldnt it be a good crack of a spark. is there points or timeing on this motor.it ran great untill it went under water.can any one help.
also can you tell me its age. on the plate it has 55el and 663L318231

was it salt or fresh water it fell into.... did you remove the plugs before you tried to start it when it was first recovered. Was it running when it went overboard? your spark should jump a 3/8" gap and be a nice blue color. How long did it run after you got it started 1st time after retrieval? Did you pull the flywheel off and dry under there? or did you at least blow alot of air under there? and did it hit the bottom.... as in come back up with mud on it weeds ect...

hi thank for quick reply.
yes it was salt water,no i removed the plugs the next day after i tried to start it at home ,
no it was cold we were just starting to go fishing we were on the beach in about 4 foot of water it didn't hit the bottom the steering link saved it but went right under,the spark is not strong its its more like a flint spark off a lighter it just doesn't look right,after retrieval it it ran for about 5 or 10 minutes,no i dried every but under the fly wheel.
just tried to start it on the muffs today and you see smoke coming from exhaust and its kicking back and back firring trying to start i will blow some air under fly wheel and try but its been in the garage and it should of dried of i think.

I would check two things first the stator under the flywheel rust build up may inhibit the spark the gap between the flywheel and the stator are set any flucuation can affect the spark also check to see if your coils are corroded where the wires insert into them. if there are green i would either buy new ones or get PB Blaster a great corrosion inhibitor you can get at any auto or marine parts store. also use this spay inside the cilinder heads through the spak plug holes and turn the engine over without the plugs to spit the fluid out with any crap it has in there with it good luck. By the way i was having the same problem with my 2 stroke the last two days and come to find out the last time i changed the plugs i reversed the wires and it ran for a while then quit. I would get backfire no turnover. I set the wires back and vroom it runs today.

weggo;

Your engine comes up as:

55 EL 663-318051 - 663-318398 1987 or;

55 EL 663-31206 - 663-32415 1974, interesting, I'll look into this further, however the parts listing below is for the s/n range.

From here:

http://www.marinshopen.se/Motorer/O...årslista/Mariner4055hp/tabid/461/Default.aspx

Parts listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/695.cfm

Look under CRANKSHAFT AND PISTON, item 20 and they are available here:

Did you take the motor in and let them LOOK at it?

If there is not an obvious crack in the flywheel then DO NOT order a new one until you remove it for inspection.

You may have a rusted stator shorting a winding, without proper inspection and testing you may be spending money on un-necessary parts.
