I trashed all three gears on my 1990 Mariner 75HP lower unit and have finally received the new parts. I am looking for any tips on reassembling the unit. Especially on how to set gear clearances with shims. I have a manual that gives the clearance specs but does not tell how to measure them. Any other tips from people who have done this before would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Mariner 75HP lower unit reassembly

I put this back together but have run into a problem.

When I had the LU on the bench it shifted ok but on the motor it seems to be in neutral all the time. I took the LU back off again and noticed that if I have it sitting on the bench with the prop shaft vertical, the gears engage like they should. But on the motor they don't. With the motor not running and in forward I can push in on the prop and feel the clutch "engage". There seems to be alot of end play in the prop shaft (much more than any shims would correct). What am I missing? The new parts seem to match up to the old.

Is the bearing carrier fully seated.

As far as I can tell. It has a flange that bolts to the gear housing with two bolts. It is bolted down solid. I don't see how it couldn't be right.
