Mariner 9.9 Stuck in Forward

I have a Mariner 9.9 on my 14 ft aluminum flat bottom. When I was coming in to the dock last weekend, I moved the throttle to the shift point and shifted into reverse in order to stop(I was already going very slow, basically idle). When I did so, the engine stalled and it was very hard to move the shift lever. I tried to get it into neutral but it went into forward and is stuck there. I can not get it back into neutral. Is there something seriously wrong with my lower unit? Thanks.
Nathan

This may be a stupid answer but - are the oil plugs in in the lower unit? I left them out this spring and the same thing happened to me. Now I am rebulding the unit.

Re: Mariner 9.9 Stuck in Forward

My uncle figured it out for me. Somehow the safety that keeps you from starting the motor got jammed into a rib in the flywheel. I have no idea how this happened, but I hope it works when I get out on the water.
Thanks for the help.
Nathan
