I've got an '82 Mariner 30 HP. I take the prop and forward thrust hub off yearly to grease the splines. Never had any problems.

However, today I was looking at my repair manual and I noticed that the reverse thrust hub (from rear it goes nut, washer, reverse thrust hub, propeller .... ) is actually supposed to be a separate piece from the propeller. Mine is firmly fused to the prop, and has probably been that way since I've had the boat/motor (I thought it was supposed to be that way).

So, I'm wondering, is it important to break that reverse thrust hub loose and maybe get some grease around it or will it be fine like it is.

If the answer is "break it loose", best way to do so with out damaging the (aluminum) prop?

Ayuh,..... Don't go beatin' on yer's,...

Many, 'n I mean Many props, that is a part of the prop, not removable,...

Thanks, guys. I'll fight of my usual "tinkeritis" and leave it be. I assume the reverse thrust hub is steel, as is the forward one - so if I ever replace the prop I'll be able to knock it off at that time w/o worrying about destroying the prop.

The thrust washer is the one that goes on first before you slide on the prop. That one is a separate piece.

On most Mercury props for that motor the "front" washer(the one next to the prop nut) is actually fixed to the prop hub and doesn't come off.

Yeah, mine sure doesn't want to come off. What was confusing me was the drawing in my Service Manual that looks like it is a separate piece. Oh well. Seems like not a big thing to worry about at this time.
