Hey guys.

Just got back into fishing and bought a used boat.
I have a 85 Mariner, 40 HP, 2 plugs.

Motor has been rebuilt and only used a few times before I got it.

I took it out 3 or 4 times with about 10 stops and recranks each time. No problems whatsoever. Started first try each time.

Except, the last time, it ran fine, I landed it and back the trailer in the water, got back in the boat and it wouldn't turn over.

The starter engages and the fly wheel spins, but I found the plugs are not getting any fire.

I dont think its the ignition switch.
I jumped the kill switch and still got nothing.
Fuel lines seem to be working fine.
Plugs and plug wires are fairly new.

In an unrelated topic, anyone know the proper gaps I need?

Anyone aware of any such problems with this model?

If so or not, where would you start to diagnose the problem.

Thanks in advance guys, I like working on the motor, but I like fishing more!

Could be your switchbox.. They usually just die. I though the plugs were "Surface gap" type.

If you "jump" the kill switch (short the leads together) it WON"T start, they must be open.
Use a meter at the kill switch to make sure the leads aren't shorted when the key is on.

That's same motor as the Merc 402.

Those outta be surface gap plugs, if the plugs in there have an adjustable gap "arm" - throw them away ASAP and get the right ones from the dealer. Regular plugs are bad for that motor.

As for the spark failure - once you've eliminated external wiring issues, you'll need to go through the test procedures as described in the manual to determine if your ignition failure is stator, trigger, or switchbox. You'll need an ohmmeter.

-W

Great advice everyone. The advice on the plugs is great. I'll get those right away.

Everyone better break down and buy the manual if they plan on any kind of long term commitment to thier old Merc. :D

All we can do here is help explain "how" - "why" -etc etc.

-W
