Hello
I have mostly worked on 1950's Evinrudes and Johnsons but somehow ended up with a buddy's Mark 5 in my basement. The engine had been seized and whether or not to continue with it was in question. After removing the head of the thing I was able to free it up and get it moving again. There actually appears to be very little scoring in the cylinders and the rings look good. Not really sure why it seized but doesn't really matter. He has decided that he wants to get it up and going again. The ignition coils are a cracked and crumbling mess. I guess my question is how to replace them. I have seen mention of two different types for these models and to be honest the ones in it look like neither. The flywheel is Phelon which makes me think the coils would be as well but I am not sure. They are mounted on what looks like stacked metal plates which came off easy but it seems to me that the coil should detach from the metal mounts and a new one should go in its place. The problem is that it seems to be glued on. Am I missing something? I will upload pictures soon. Thanks

Re: Mark 5 Coil

you can get replacement coils from Jim Judkins, email is oldoutboardjim@hotmail.com he's a good guy

there's a metal tab that holds the coil in place on the core, bend it flat and tap the core out of center of coil with something that won't damage the core.

If the coils don't want to come off easily, cut them off before bashing away on the lams...

Re: Mark 5 Coil

Okay so I managed to hammer out the metal center through the coil. Not as easy as I had suspected. Probably cutting, as suggested by Chinewalker, would have been good but I only just read the response. I don't think there is significant damage. I can see the imprint of the drift on the end but it didn't change anything but the face. Should I be concerned? The coils were pretty far gone and fell apart as I removed them from the plate and the spark plug wires broke right off. The copper in them is corroded and I will replace them. How were they attached to the old coil? It looked to be one piece but the new ones are not that way?
Also, if the coils were bad should I expect the condensers to be bad? Is there a way to test them?
Thank you all for your help
